The legend of Maa Kali of Pavagadh says that Champaner at the foot of Pavagadh Hills was established by the grace of Maa Kaali. Once Ma Kali took human form and danced in raas graba (dance in devotion to Maa or Mataji) in Champaner. The Patai ruler Jaisingh was present there at this auspicious event to watch the devotional dance.

The devotion was lacking at that moment and he watched the Mother who had taken a from of woman for the devotional dance, with lusty eyes. Due to this act he soon lost the kingdom and life against an attack by a Muslim ruler Mahmud Begda.
